Dawnn Lewis Talks Bowling, LA Urban League & A Different World


BIOGRAPHY

DAWNN LEWIS is a multitalented and multifaceted individual: a Grammy Award-winning singer, multiple ASCAP & BMI Award-winning songwriter, film actor I’M GONNA GIT U SUCKA, DREAMGIRLS and a Series TV creator/producer (BLACK JAQ) for ABC & can now be seen recurring on the hit TV shows MAJOR CRIMES & BETTER CALL SAUL, (starring Bob Odenkirk & Patrick Fabian) the highly anticipated spin off of Breaking Bad! & as the narrative voice for BET’s bio-series BEING; featuring episodes on Faith Evans, Common, Tamar Braxton, Deitric Haddon & MC Lyte. Dawnn can also be “heard” giving voice to several characters such as “LaBarbara” in Fox’s hit series FUTURAMA, “Mrs. Hanshaw” in SOPHIA THE FIRST, “Granny McStuffins” in DOC MCSTUFFINS, as well as a variety of characters in the animated series TURBO & Disney/Pixar’s highly anticipated current animated feature hit INSIDE OUT!, and the mega hit MONSTERS UNIVERSITY. She also gives voice to characters in the upcoming animated series versions of the hit feature films: Disney’s - BIG HERO 6, & DreamWorks - HOME, as “Bobe”. Christmas 2014, marked the release of Dawnn’s first Holiday CD release, “Donny McCullough & Friends: CANDLES IN THE WINDOW”. DAWNN stars in the recently released film THE DIVORCE!, written & directed by Don B Welch, which also co-stars Vanessa Bell Calloway, Tatyana Ali, Freda Payne & Judy Pace. She is currently co-starring with Malcolm Jamal Warner, Tamala Jones, Michael Beach, Corbin Blue & Shanica Knowles in the movie “MEGACHURCH MURDER” premiering Feb 7 on the LIFETIME ch. Dawnn recently wrapped production on the feature film THE REVIVAL, written & produced by acclaimed actor Harry Lennix & guest starred on an episode of SURVIVOR’S REMORSE, a new series produced by NBA star, LeBron James & Tom Werner, starring Tichina Arnold & Mike Epps, as well as a 70’s throw-back episode of the hit TV series CASTLE. She is also co-starring in the recently released Levinson Prod. film “A LESSON IN ROMANCE.” While continuing to shoot her recurring role as Dr. Knapp on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Dawnn worked on the film: TWO IN co-starring with “DAYS star” Allison Sweeney & Ed Asner, which premiered on The Hallmark Channel, and co-starred with Courtney B. Vance & Tyler Williams in the Disney film “LET IT SHINE”, which got record breaking viewership of 5.7 million on it’s premiere, and continues to break records as it is repeatedly aired! Dawnn also gives voice to the title character in the 2013 summer released animated feature film DINO TIME!, as well as a supporting role in the award winning animated-futuristic-sci-fi film STRANGE FRAME. At The Pasadena Playhouse, she co-starred with Vanessa Williams in the Lynn Nottage play INTIMATE APPARREL, and then starred in the groundbreaking John Avnet/Rodrigo Garcia short film series WIGS!, in the piece JENNIFER written and directed by Mykelti Williamson, for which she also composed and performed some of the films underscore music. She’s served the last 7.5 years on the National Advisory Board of the NATIONAL CENTER FOR CIVIL & HUMAN RIGHTS which opened in Atlanta, Ga. June 2014, & completed her fourth term on the SAG National Board of Directors, participating in it’s recent successful merger with sister union AFTRA, while serving all 4 yrs as the National & Los Angeles Co-Chair of the SAG now SAG-AFTRA Singers Committee. She currently serves as a SAG/AFTRA National Union Delegate. Recent guest appearances include: (CBS) CSI: MIAMI, (FOX) BREAKING IN & (BET) REED BETWEEN THE LINES. Perhaps best known for her roles on the hit TV shows A DIFFERENT WORLD (composer of shows theme song), HANGIN’ WITH MR. COOPER, ANY DAY NOW, she also had recurring roles on the ABC Family’s THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER and the CW Network series ONE TREE HILL. She was featured in the Warner Bros. feature film THE PREACHERS KID & the Fox animated film FUTURAMA: INTO THE WILD GREEN YONDER. Dawnn also starred in the 2009 NYC City Center “Encore’s” Broadway presentation of THE WIZ as Addapearle and is often called upon to create and establish leading characters in successful shows in a variety of genres such as: “Smitty” in HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, co-starring with Matthew Broderick & Megan Mullaly; “The Voice Of God” in the World Premiere Musical NORMAN’S ARK at the Ford Theatre; starring in the World Premiere of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David musical LOVE SWEET LOVE & receiving rave reviews and the BEST ACTRESS: FRED AWARD (Los Angeles) and nominated for the 2007 BEST ACTRESS: SUZI AWARD (Atlanta, ALLIANCE THEATRE), for her “knock your socks off!!!” performance in the World Premiere of the Broadway hit “SISTER ACT: THE MUSICAL” as the “outrageous, Nun-On-The-Run”, Deloris Van Cartier. Last summer she re-created her spellbinding performance in Donald Welch’s star-studded cast of THE DIVORCE. Both THE DIVORCE & SISTER ACT were nominated for multiple NAACP Image Awards. She was honored with the 2015 CARIBBEAN HERITAGE AWARD, 2008 INTEGRITY AWARD from the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival and in 2000 she won the Best Actress NAACP IMAGE AWARD for her transforming performance in THE MARRIAGE. Dawnn’s record label, Morning Jewel Music, released her successful solo CD Worth Waiting For; the title song is featured in the Disney movie THE POOF POINT soundtrack, in which she starred. Her concert schedule has included sold out performances at H.O.M.E in Beverly Hills, the Hands For Hope Jazz Festival with legends: Peter White, Eloise Laws, Paul Brown, and Smitty Smith. Just prior to that she did a sold out concert in the Cayman Islands for The CAYMAN HEART FUND. She’s recorded with or composed for Everett Harp, Patrice Rushen, Vanessa Williams, Nancy Wilson, Take 6, Wayman Tisdale, Grover Washington Jr., Quincy Jones & Tom Scott to name a few. She gives voice to animated characters for various TV series including THE CLEVELAND SHOW, THE LIFE & TIMES OF TIM, HANDY MANNY, KING OF THE HILL,THE BOONDOCKS, The X-MEN & SPIDERMAN, RICK & MORTY, (to name a few). Dawnn also finds time to teach Master Classes, mentor youth across the country, give motivational lectures and lend her support to: The Los Angeles Urban League, The United Negro College Fund; American Cancer Society; The March of Dimes; Youth Entertainment Studios; the Hall of Fame Foundation; Habitat For Humanity; The United States Conference on AIDS; The K.I.S. Foundation for Sickle Cell Disease; Artists For A New South Africa; Campfire Boys and Girls; The NBA/WNBA and other important causes.
